first impression HS939, comparison to HS821

Hi, as i recently bought a new 939 with 0 kilometers (actually 5) from a private guy, no dealer, i just want to give you guys my first impressions.

yesterday i drove the 939 first 100 km in stock configuration. bike does not run as bad as i supposed, no surging in town at 2500-5000, where my older 821 run really bad at 3000-4000 (before rexxer). 939 does not have that. what's really annoying is going from load to overrun and from overrun to load. the transition is quite hard, in reality there is no transition. you always feel a jerk, regardless how smooth and soft i want to do that.
installed boosterplug and healtech flapper eliminator yesterday evening after the run and drove again today.
first with my "old" 821 with rexxer, then with the 939 with the 2 mods.
1) 821 runs really smooth, no jerk between load and overrun, without extra taking care of it
2) 939 still has no surging and the change between overrun and load is much better than stock, but it's still there, even though not as hard as stock

motor of 821 feels more agile, 939 feels more "adult". 821 more hyper, 939 more "multi" and touring. actually i would say - 821 is more fun to drive,
engine sound of 939 is like of a bigger engine (what it is ) and is a little deeper.
maybe the differnece between the 2 also is based because 821 has rexxer and 18500 km and 939 is nearly stock and not broken in, but i doubt that the bike will change behaviour a lot when broken in.
Gearbox is very smooth on 821 and on 939 still very hard and "stiff" at changing gears. first kilometers neutral was not to find when engine run and bike was in idle, this changed after the first 100 km, neutral is no problem any more.
Even the bikes run very simliar, of course, they also run very different, much more than i expected from +100ccm.
if both bikes would be new i would choose the 821, even i will stay with my new 939 and sell the 821 (hopefully soon).

but i think, after break-in i defintly will think about a rexxer mapping again.
rexxer evo-box i will keep.

PS: i did not check, but i think transmission ratio is longer at 939, right ? with the same rpm, speeds are a little higher than with the 821.
maybe this is the reason why 821 feels more agile and more "hyper".

Great comparo.

The 939 seems appealing due to the major mid-range torque advantage over the 821. The 939 has taller/longer gearing.

I just don't think the bump in cc's provided an expected performance gain for the 939. Think if the next gen is a bump over 1000 cc's. That's not a dramatic jump in displacement but when you start talking about liter engine performance, bhp in the very low 100's isn't competitive. Weight and torque not considered. I understand the 939 was victim to emissions updates, too.

I've had my 821 for 3 years and 45000 miles and I gotta say the 939 blew me away lol. It really was a good chunk faster. I think your not goosing it enough to feel the power

you are right, i just reved up to 7000 because of brand new with only 100-200 km. but in this range i do not feel more power .
maybe topspeed is 230 km/h compared to 225 km/h, but this is only crucial on track, on public roads/autobahn, where we have 100/130 km/h limits in Austria, you are already high in the criminal with both feet going these speeds .

The 939 was created as a response to euro emissions, not a "victim".

I'll speculate a little here...939 has more power from displacement and tuning, including the upped midrange, about 9 N-m. That's the sweat part about the 821, so you have a pretty decent stroke with cams and heads that flow (rev). For an 800, it's a sweet combo. The 939 I believe only added .5mm of stroke and really upped the bore but it just does seem like a commensurate increase in power. Then again, I haven't ridden a 939, so take this with a grain of salt...

After that, it's maintenance. 939 probably wins this, no belts.

The 939 definitely still has belts.

funny thread - i write a comparison because i have both side by side in my garage, and some others know (better) how they perform
