I made the 2 hour trip to the dealer and got they battery checked, they reckon it's fine, they also advised that Ducati rarely replace a dodgy battery under waranty. I will leave it off the tender for a while and see how good their testing is.

While they had the bike they also did the recall works; although I am still waiting for my letter.

For those with harness issues, can you tell us where it was pinched/flattened? I'd like to check mine before I do any big trips.

I checked out the new Li-Ion batteries from Battery Tender. They weigh maybe a pound. Nice weight saving alternative if you have to junk the old one out of pocket.

I didn't see the harness that was removed so I can't say where it was flattened. I have to say, though, my dealer/Ducati did the right thing and replaced everything electrical...not knowing what might have been damaged but had not failed yet.

The error code is "Dashboard and Engine",

And the bike season has just began.........
Keep us posted to the cause. Given how "smart" this bike is, I can't help but wonder if the HID conversion is connected....?

Identified failures, bu still investigating on root cause

Got my dealer on phone today, about investigations results.

Ducati said that currently " few" HS around the world are reporting the exact same failure, " flashing dashboard, fans on, etc)

Ducati is asking the dealer to replace under warranty systematicaly:
dashboard, ecu, and both coils, etc.

The first/front cylinder coil has burned and is now in short circuit, which then cause all others electrically involved parts to pass away.

Ducati is still investigating on the root cause which is killing the front cylinder coil.
To burn a coil , you need a huge electrical surge, or cumulative stress surges which finally will destroy coils insulation.

This is not HyperStrada specific, but common to all new Hyper 2013/2014 models.

So this story would end on a service recall preventive fix sooner or later

That ended up being the same thing that did it to mine. Total bill was 5 hours labor @ $100/hr, New dash @ $1000, two new coils @ $220 each, and two new spark plugs. Total bill ended up being just over $2000; covered by warranty.

They said that there is a chance it could have fried the ECU (almost $2000 itself), but they don't know until they replace all of the other parts and fire it up. Luckily, mine didn't do that.

Hopefully they've already order all of your parts because it took a good 2-3 weeks to get them from Ducati alone. Make sure to bring you dealer both keys because once they replace your dash, they have to "re-match" your keys to it so the bike will run.

Good luck.

I emailed my dealer with this thread, expressing my concerns as I plan to do some long trips with this bike. They were kind enough to enquire with their Duc Canada rep. The response was that as long as all software updates have been done, there shouldn't be an issue.

Seems strange to me that buggy software would fry coils, but thats all I have to go on. I really don't know how these supercomputer bikes run everything.

Hope they are right!

I think they're confused to be honest. Mine happened about 3 days after I had the update.

Interesting response. I asked my dealer last week if there were any software updates for my bike, initially they told me no, then about three hours later they rang to say yes all Hypers have had or require an update. I have had no updates since purchase in June of last year and still going strong. I'm paranoid about what is going to happen when I do get the update!
