Tire Wear - need a new rear tire and when?

Hey guys,

I currently have 7500 KM on my stocker and it seems to be holding up really well, but I'm trying to guess-timate when I can expect to need a new one.

I know well that tire wear depends on more than just accumulated distance, such as those who do lots of long rides on freeways and wear the centers faster than normal, guys who ride more aggressively than most, etc. That aside, for those who've replaced their rear tires *out of necessity*, what kind of milage did you get? We you impressed?

With luck, my hyper will be coming out of storage in 4-6 weeks, so with a few other expenses on my radar, the better I can guess when a new one will be needed, the better.

Cheers!
FR

Best place to review tires is under user reviews on Tire Racks site. Ours have been on Multi's for a while so they review often. I think we determined around 7,000 mi but there's a lot to consider. You have to mind flat center wear if it doesn't get leaned over very much. Have you actually checked the wear bars?

There's a good thread on stock tires and alternatives. Search it.

My rear tire was toast after about 8000 km put a Michelin road 2 on it but I preferred the road 3 that was on my R6, both tires are great though. Am also going to try a Dunlop d616 I got cheap sometime this summer.

The R3's will be my next set. Lot's of Multi's shod those and 10K miles is pretty common from reviews.

My delivery tires were shot at 7000km. The first sign was feathering of the tire in the center, very soon after followed by the appearance of the steel belts (maybe 150km). This is a long way past the wear indicators of course. I was awake up to the short remaining life after the feathering appears as I got caught out on my Monster once when heading off on a weekend ride. As we were leaving home my mate and I agreed that I would need to change the tire on return from the ride; 200km later I was generating sparks from the rear and was lucky to get to a shop for a change.
I have fitted Angel GTs in place of the Scorpions and I am really pleased with the grip in the dry (I am yet to try them in the wet as we haven't had a wet day here for months) and I will reserve my judgement on wear rates until I see the shinny steel bits again.
I do ride in Sport mode most of the time, but I think the course road surfaces in our country shave hundreds of kms off the life of all tires.
