Magnetic tank bag mod

I like having a small tank bag in front of me for phone, wallet, water bottle, etc. I have an old Joe Rocket Manta that started out as a magnetic bag on my 748 and Monster, then was fitted with a SW-Motech quick-lock for my 848. I couldn't find a way for it to fit on the tank without having the strap buckle go under the seat (too long). Which means I have to take the seat off I was originally going to drill holes on the fuel tank cover and attach the tank ring, but when I got it off, I decided to try something different.

What I ended up doing was using double stick tape to attach a couple of metal strips to the underside of the cover. I used the sides of a metal 5" angle bracket I had lying around.

Then I mounted high-powered magnets on a plastic plate which I bolted to the underside of the tank bag. I ended up using two CMS Magnetics 112 lb holding power lined up along the center line. They seem to attach through the bag and tank cover well enough. I have some CMS Magnetics 150 lb holding power as a backup in case I find I need more. The rubberized bottom of the tank bag keeps it from sliding around and the curve of the tank keeps the bolts from touching.

Just for security, I added some straps to the front.

This is actually an awesome idea! Any photos of the metal strips underneath the plastic tank cover? I'd definitely be up for trying this on mine.

Unfortunately, I took the "in process" pictures a couple of days ago and managed to brick my phone in between.

However, here's a mock-up. The angle bracket thickness is about 3/32" and just cleared the gap between the tank and the cover after adding the 2-sided 3M foam tape. The two black areas represent where I installed the metal strips on the back side of the cover. You can use more strips, but you don't want to use strips wider than 1" each or they won't contour to the curvature.

Hope this helps.

I might try this by putting one at each corner of my tank bag. I realized that my current bag is much too large for the bike, and I can't get it strapped down tight enough. It slides off one side of the tank and hangs there.
