Arrow If ain't broke don't fix it - Or maybe not

Helllllllllllo folks!

Long time no see. Been pretty busy but never took the time to stop by so you can accuse of procrastination.

Last summer I've noticed a buzzing noise from the bike. I could only hear it at some specific rev. values around 5000 and 8000 RPM until I found it was the tailpipe protector. It was still in place but the 'damper' washers (red arrow) have became too much compressed and left some leeway to the protector to rattle freely. If there is something I hate for any moving vehicle I own is some rattle and /or buzzing noise. I had to do something.

I thought adding an additional 'damper' washer would fix the issue and it did. The problem was that I've never thought about adding some threadlock glue on the screws prior to re-installation. I was punished for this lack of knowledge few weeks later when the two screw came undone and the whole tailpipe protector fell off the bike at a moment, of course, that I never heard anything when this appended. Probably while I was driving. I know my luck. It could have fell right in front on the rear wheel. You can imagine the rest of the story. BUT I have a lucky star just for me and it's SUPERMASSIVE. That's another story.

However, following this untentional protector shed, there were no rattle...

So three weeks ago I ordered new fasteners and a new tailpipe protector made of carbon fiber. Not the OEM metal one since it's colour turned plum over what as originally black. I've been told carbon fiber colors does not fade away. Also, I wanted to have some carbon bits BUT this mean 240$ less in my wallet. Ouch.

First a picture of the original metalic tailpipe protector. Notice the colour.

Second is the new carbon fiber tailpipe protector. Looking good.

I noticed mine rattling at idle a couple weeks ago. Like I said before, I listen to tunes so don't care what buzzes unless it gets louder than my headset.

Looks good. But I'm not paying that much for a little shield that I've already scratched up once.

I hear you and I agree. 200$ for a tailpipe protector is too expensive. BUT my reasoning was not only eastetic driven.

1- I had to replace the missing part because I've actually destroyed (melted) an even more expensive pair of rain pants with a direct contact with the pipe.
2- Add to the fact that the metal version of the tailpipe loose it's colour over time. In this case, it took less than a year to turn form black to plum.
3- Why should I have bothered replacing a weak item with another one?

That is my thought process.

Note that for a while I was considering replacing other parts (like the gas tank cover) with the carbon option but after seeing the prices I actually may not anymore.

Woah! If I only knew about these before. Tood bad I had to order almost everything. Not only the tailpipe protector but the fasteners as well.

Thanks for the suggestions.

You're making me think I should have added some threadlock to my screws when I did this! Think that's a job for the weekend!

Make sure it's heat rated. I know red is, but might be too much?

Well, it's red on the OEM screws, so probably right. Mind you, the stuff I have was given to me by a friend who's an aircraft mechanic - they use it on the brakes. So it'll probably hold up ok for this application!
