sprocket removal and replacement

Time to renew the sprockets-I'm at 34,000km and they are definitely done. I've changed lots of sprockets on "2-sided" swingarms but never on a SSSA. The manual says I have to break the chain and remove the rear wheel. I'm wondering if loosen the chain to max and remove the front sprocket with the chain on if that would work? Anyone have experience or words of advice for this operation? TIA

They're probably telling you that so you replace the chain and both sprockets at the same time... Which really isn't a bad practice to follow.

+1. If sprockets are worn, it's reasonable that the chain would be also.

I had to replace chain about a week and a half ago while on roadtrip to CA/NV, so it's pretty new. Just have to weasel the sprockets on now! Had sprockets on order so didn't want to spend the stupid $$$ for OEM ones while at the dealer.

You can get the front sprocket off and it will give you slack to get the chain off the rear sprocket. Taking the front sprocket off is a bit harder than you would wish as the foot peg bracket needs to be removed too.

You probably should replace the chain with the sprockets anyway. Considering the cost of the rear sprocket I would not want to damage it with an old chain.
