Clutch Going?

Stradista's,

Having some clutch issues. Searching Duc dry clutch problems hasn't helped much. Here are my symptoms:

- Very hard to find neutral; slightly easier as the bike warms up and I've been moving. Recently impossible just after a cold start.
- Can sometimes feel the clutch grabbing a gear ever so slightly when lever fully engaged; can actually feel it walk forward or trying to with lever fully engaged.
- Hard engagement into 1st from Neutral, and usually 1st to 2nd; loud, grabby "thunk".

10,300 miles with full service about 900 miles ago: oil/filter, plugs, air filter, etc. Chain tension is good and playing with the lever slack adjuster doesn't affect much. I always had to balance my preferred clutch feel with a little difficulty with neutral in the past, but nothing like this. I have not messed with the subframe mounted cable adjuster yet.

I ride harder than probably the average rider. I enjoy slamming down a gear or two and launching from urban traffic speeds, when able. I'll pop the front in 1st occasionally but never do burn outs. Never do clutch-less shifts.

Thoughts?

My guess is that you need more adjustment than the screw on the bar can provide. Get at the adjuster under the side cover to do the big change, use the bar adjuster to fine tune.

I have the finding neutral problem when cold. I ran out of bar adjustment the other day, so I adjusted the the mid-way adjuster. I have been doing a lot of city riding this past month, and well, I don't know, but I'm starting to think these cables are a bit like a rubber band. As for your other problems, I haven't had those yet. Cheers

Sounds like it's working, but you are not disengaging the plates fully. +1 with Porkrind - take the slack out at frame adjuster, then fine tune at the grip.

I had to do a double take when I saw this post. For a moment, I was like "what kind of an asshole uses Porkrind as a username?" Then I remembered that's me.

Did you guys slack out the lever adjuster first, then hit the frame mounted one? Just want to eliminate a lot of startup/shutdown if I can.

I still find it odd that I can get the factory 2mm play at the lever. But, my lever adjust is about at the bitter end.

Clutch cable needs adjustment. Sort it and you'll find its fine.
