Hope the better Denso is kind to my sprag, cause I didn't replace the sprag and I really don't want to cut her open again.

I got a question for the alternator cover puller tool you made. The middle bolt is not supossed to thread into the alternator spindle right? Because the middle bolt size on my hyper is 8mm but the one you made has a 10mm bolt? So its merly supossed to just push on the top of the spindle and to pull the cover off? Not to screw into?

That's right. It just pushes on the center. It's a really simple tool...

In my picture there are some nuts that i just used as spacers because my 2 screws were too long.

Can you believe the Ducati OEM puller costs over $160! The $25 one I purchased off eBay worked fine.

Bummer...any suggestions on where I should shop for this?

Oh I can believe it. That's where Ducati makes money - parts and service. I bet they lose money on bike sales. It's so simple though, I bet someone could rig one up from a door hinge if they needed to! NO WAY it's worth $160.

I actually have my generator cover tool if anyone needs it. gatdammit I would have included it in your package but I couldn't find it at the time...

The sprag clutch is an interesting one. Here's my theory for discerning sprag clutch vs starter motor failure:
-Starter motor failure: Press the starter button and the bike acts as though there is a dead short. Dashboard flickers on and off. Engine barely turns over and requires several presses of the button while making clicking noises. Slowly turns over and eventually catches. The starter and electrical system feels generally weak.
-Sprag clutch failure: Press the starter button and starter spins too freely. May occasionally grab and rotate the engine, but if bad enough the starter will spin without turning over the motor. The electrical system should still feel pretty strong in this case. touficzeidan, did you have the dash flickering issue when your sprag went? Did the starter sound like it was spinning freely but the engine would never catch?

It's funny this comes up because when I first brought my Hyper to the dealer in 2014 for the starter motor repair, they took the sprag clutch out to inspect it and said it was fine. I guess they have known about it for a long time. They said Ducati was requesting photos of all sprag clutches, I assume to look for score marks or something.

edit: I found the photos they gave me during that repair job. I guess this is the surface they were inspecting. Keep in mind, replacing this part requires a flywheel holder tool because it's behind other stuff. I guess you could use an impact gun too. And make sure you replace the nut and use threadlocker because they have been known to wiggle loose, so I've heard.

Sprags normally fail due to the weak spring, you can replace the spring for a few quid.
