Starter Going?

Stradista's,

Bike has recently developed an issue. 1st cold start of day and the start cycle is very slow, drains the dash as it cycles, and will roll an extra cycle or two after I release the starter (hasn't turned over yet). It catches on about the 3rd attempt, and I let it cycle 3-4 time on each attempt.

On subsequent starts throughout the ride day, it turns quicker - about what I remember before I left the bike with a family member for about 7 months. This was around the time we first started discovering the 1st model starters were shit.

I have a Shorai that I keep on a Battery Tender Jr most of the time. It typical reads 12.9 - 13.0 Volts cold, right off the tender and it doesn't improve the start cycle issue at all. The bike was driving and charged regularly while I was away and it didn't start doing this until a few weeks after I got it back.

The negative terminal was a little loose but that didn't affect it. All fuses are 4.0, though both fuse blocks have a little white corrosion building around the tops of the fuses. Had a little issue with my aux lamps but corrected that and still had no effect.

Just wondering if my starter is finally kicking the bucket. It's the original. If it was a quick pull, I'd have it bench tested but it's not a simple swap. Hasn't left me stranded yet but is very sketchy on cold starts.

After reading your description, I'm not 100% sure its the starter motor. The typical failure mode for the Taigene is struggling during hot starts.

Double check all your connections are tight - the starter cables, and big ground lug on the left side of the bike.

1) Never keep a lithium battery on a charger. Maybe use a charger for a 6 to 12 hour period once every month or so. That's all that is needed. Frankly, unless there is a parasitic drain on the battery, charging is only needed if you are playing in the garage installing stuff pulling from the battery with the engine off.

2) Only use a lithium battery charger. Lithium charging is VERY voltage specific.

Best:

3) See this chart for % charge:

4) Ducati twins appear to be a bear to turn over, especially when hot. I use a 16 cell lithium battery, which does the job with plenty to spare.

You never said which Shorai.

They have their own charger which balances the cells externally with their charger.

This is why I selected the Antigravity battery, which allows for any lithium charger.

Most lithium battery companies overstate the amp hour capacity using a poorly crafted conversion. Making the change to lithium requires fitting the biggest lithium possible in the same space.

The ultimate authority is _cy_ on AdvRider.com:

If it is Lithium, they have trouble starting in the cold - the recommended approach is to turn on the headlight for a bit to warm it up.

I have the LFX18A1-BS12. While they certainly want you to buy there tender, they state right on their site that tenders without reverse-sulfation modes are fine.

The more I read on Shorai's in bikes, it's probably just not warming up enough before cycling. This makes sense for a number of reasons:
1. It was 70-80F in FL when I picked it up and still cycled normally.
2. It's been 40F or below routinely at night where I'm currently at.
3. It turns much better during the day after 1st ride.

Starter wasn't great before I swapped the stock battery.

Try a new battery before you go after a new starter. I've had a similar issue and I was convinced that it was the starter, until I tried a new battery.
Just tried and let us know.

Sounds like the battery or poor connection somewhere especially since you mention furring on fuses. Clean all the earth, battery and starter connections
