Break-in experiences?

Bought a new bike, of course I have to start this thread. i searched but didn't find much discussion.

For those of you who bought your bike new a went through the break-in, did you find that the engine smoothed out over time?

The 939 seems to run even rougher than the 821 did, could be the stiff suspension magnifying things, but it seems more violent at times. Under mild acceleration I get lots of hesitation and around 4500 - 5k it will even backfire a bit. if I accelerate with a bit more gusto (not WOT, maybe 1/3) the bike pulls strong and smooth. Not sure if this is a symptom of lean fueling, the compression rings not being fully seated yet or something else.

Aside from about 15 - 20 minutes of highway (where I still varied my throttle as much as I could) I followed the break-in procedure to a T thanks to the lovely winding Northern California back roads so I'm hoping (and pretty sure) this isn't my doing.

My 939 didn't run rough but it sure had a snatchy throttle until I put a full termi on with the remap. Smoothed the bike right out.

Thanks, throttle on race mode with the SP feels about like touring mode on the 821 so on complaints there. I haven tried race yet as that doesn't seem like a good idea during break in, too tempting :-)

I'm taking the 821 in for some more sleuthing in relation to it's occasional limp mode issue tomorrow so I'll take the opportunity to ask them about this as well. Hopefully it's just running lean and a proper map will sort it out.

The 939 is also Euro 4 compliant, which is a stricter emissions standard. It has been reported that most Euro 4 bikes run worse in the low end RPM's. Nothing a rapidbike tuner can't fix.

The suspension does make things feel rougher and can influence your throttle hand. In my data logging I overlaid my throttle position log with some riding video and noticed that whenever I went over a bump, the throttle spiked slightly. It helps to relax your arms and make smooth, definite throttle movements. Try to avoid holding it perfectly in one spot, it won't feel very good!

Yeah, I was thinking Euro4 might be to blame here, it's pretty much the 821 behavior but more pronounced. I've had a few bump to throttle moments as sport mode if a bit more sensitive than touring was on the 821, not as hard to manage as I was expecting though, definitely helps to remember to relax.

The surging is most noticeable under mild acceleration, I was surprised by the backfiring. It also seems to struggle below 4k whereas the 821 was fine above 3500, so yeah, all sounds like a Euro4 issue. Ironically, i'm getting worse gas mileage, though I suppose that could be related to break-in.

I bought a Cramp Buster for hwy travel years back. Would take it off for around town riding. I use it all the time now because it doesn't really get in the way if on/ off the throttle a lot and the paddle rest is great at damping the hyper's sensitive nature.
