I Ride: 2015 Hypermotard 821
Strada, motard or SP?

Hi all,

I am looking at getting either a Hyperstrada, hypermotard or an SP.

The bike will be used for getting to work and back every day, short trips on weekends and a couple of longer trips during the year (400 - 800 km).

Which would be the best of the three machines to get?

Hi

I was in Ducati HCMC last week (dropped in just to have a look).

The prices of bikes looked about 10% higher compared to Thailand prices. An 899 Panigale was about US$26,500 if I recall. Here in Thailand it is THB749,000 (which is US$23,000).

Here in Thailand the Motard is US$16,850 whilst the SP (because it is imported and has a higher duty) is US$36,800.

I am wondering if Vietnam pricing would have the same problems? The Motard is made inside ASEAN, whilst the SP would be imported from Europe.

So I am guessing that price will prove a significant factor.

The other point, are they still offering the Strada in Vietnam? It seems they are no longer offering it in Thailand!

Your choice may already be limited to 1!

@kuksul08

- I am about 1.78m tall (weight about 100kg... )
- Big bikes are expensive here, current prices in the order of between $20,000 and $25,000 the last I looked
- Bling ? Nah, who needs it. I want a machine on which I can have a bit of fun and which I can use every day

@Winkie

I haven't actually looked at an SP pricewise here, but the last prices I had on the motard and strada were around $20,000 and $22,000 (that's if the old RAM is still working properly).

Haven't checked on availability recently as I am still waiting for my special driving permit (won't get the bike till I have the permit... bugger...)

My be down to one choice as you point out, but last time they still had all three...

I am in Da Nang, Vietnam.
I bought a Strada, and I paid 22K for mine.
There was the option of a Hypermotard, however there were none in stock at the time and also the Strada suited my needs better anyway.

Not sure what is still available in Vietnam now , but the dealer in Da Nang has turned more towards kawasaki at the moment , so Ducati has taken a bit of a back seat. I believe the owner here has input in Hanoi also ?

Best of luck which ever way you decide to go.

Hi Willmac,

Saw your post elsewhere, like the pics (was wandering exactly where it was)

There is a Ducati dealer here in Hanoi (same as in HCMC). Not sure what they have, but last I was in there (about 3 or so months back) they did not seem to think that getting a machine was a problem (they had one of each on the floor, although the SP had been sold and was waiting to be collected). The prices were about what you paid, which is more or less what I am looking at a budget figure.

Still not sure what I will finally get (and it may, as in your case) be down to what they have, but first I need the bloody driving permit...

Cheers & have fun!!

You'd need to replace the triple clamps as well. Forks aren't the same diameter.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the comments/replies.

The dealer here has both Hypermotards and Hyperstradas, SP's would be a separate import meaning very high taxes and long wait.

On balance the wife prefers the Hypermotard, so to maintain world peace and stability (and simplify the approval process for various "add-ons") this is probably what I will get.

Will as a minimum need to mod it to take a decent top box for my daily commute.

About replacing the forks, it's a neat idea, but may not be so simple here as I suspect that getting the parts imported could be an expensive and time consuming business (maybe I can get them sorted the next time I travel somewhere for a while...)

Cheers!

You might look into replacing the seat with the Strada one...I am 185 cm, 75-ish kg in my leathers and helmet. The standard Motard seat was very uncomfortable for me. I find the Strada's riding position much better, and there is a bit more room for the wifey.

In any case, try to avoid the Low model.
