DTC "-" = fun

Shame on me for never at least attempting to turn DTC off completely. I got lost in all the early arguments over SP vs 'Strada and what settings could/ could not be nulled out. Honestly, I like electronic aids and it has personally saved me from buying a new left side at least once...maybe twice.

I've reached that danger zone of "too comfortable" on my 'tard. Just dicking around in traffic today I fiddled with the R.Mode settings, which I haven't touched in 2 yrs (preferred mode is HIGH/DTC 1/ ABS 1). First time I thumbed DTC/ ABS to "OFF", hit "exit", and as I suspected, back to 1/1. More traffic, more fiddling, and I remembered to punch the "memorize" key. Hot damn if DTC didn't read "-" (off) on the main dash.

Fawkin hell! The difference between "1" and "-" is pretty dramatic. First mild lean, throttle roll-on had me fish tailing for 20'. Still quite controlled, in that moto -esque soul in it's bones. I'm a bit of a hp junkie and you really feel all 110 ponies kicking when the trons are off. Plenty of meat on my PR3's and they were at temp.

I did not attempt to turn ABS completely off. I may try for schnitz n giggle, but I think no ABS is plain stupid, especially with these Heaven-forged brakes.

My settings are:
Race: DTC off, ABS 1, Engine High
Sport: DTC 2, ABS 2, Engine Medium
Rain: DTC 5, ABS 3, Engine Low

After having the DTC save me on 2 occasions while WFO through a sand patch, I've very grateful for that invention! If riding a clean, familiar section of road, turn that crap off. Otherwise, it's a nice little backup!

These match mine, except with the 'Strada, we have sport, touring, and urban.

In touring I have 2, 2, High,
and Urban I have 5, 2 Medium.

My only customized setting is the touring preset. I now know it as Off-Road in my head.

DTC off, ABS 1, Engine Low

For most of my dirt riding this works fine for me. On occasion I turn off ABS and on more slippery, hilly conditions I'll bump up TC. I've tried Engine High with this and found it just gets you into trouble faster.

Otherwise I ride with either Sport mode or Urban if it's wet out.

The roads in my area are so shitty that I get into scary situations on DTC 1...even with brand new rubber. They use some strange asphalt mixture here that essentially becomes glass as it ages. Luckily, these are typically only found at the on/ off ramps...
I was cruising with a guy along a beach front town and the entire 5 mile strip had this glossy appearance. If I went above quarter throttle, my DTC light blinked until I released. That was on DTC 3!

It's been hard to get rid of my chicken strips since this fear has arisen. I do have a run leaving one of the gas stations where I can leave a full 1st gear rolling burnout, which I quite enjoy.

Cherish your fine tarmac.

I've been meaning to turn DTC off in a parking lot to get a sense for how much it's actually changing things. I've only seen the light flash when gassing the bike hard on rough backroads in which case I consider if the fun indicator. I do wonder if it's limiting front end loft, does it do that? I dumped the clutch pretty hard in 1st while getting used to the bike back when I first had it and it just launched forward nice and stable. I would have expected that to have at least made the front light.

ABS is good as is I think, I've considered turning rear ABS off so I can slide it around a bit and the front ABS has only really kicked in during a few pucker moments when cars decide to change lanes as I'm overtaking them. I'm pretty sure it's saved me from at least cosmetic damage in both cases.

I'd say if you can rooster this bike around in the dirt, you know how to control it while the rear is spinning. You just have to watch for the bite when the rubber gets traction again. And you definitely have to keep your weight behind it or it's any easy high side scenario.

I personally wouldn't dump the clutch from a dead stop in first. If you crack it hard enough in 1st with you weight on the front end, it will probably break loose, DTC off, of course. I can state for a fact that DTC does not have wheelie control, verified with the fact that Ducati now has "wheelie control" as a stability setting on new models. I've done wheelies with the DTC on 3.

There's some good how-to's if you want to learn how to do slides right. Just be prepared to dump it.

Never really ridden in dirt (dirt roads notwithstanding) so I've never really experienced the rear getting loose. I'm actually heading out to do my first day in the dirt on Sunday complete with some instruction, so that should be interesting.

I've only managed to get the front off the ground while on the gas when cresting a hill, so I suspect I'm not riding as aggressive as I think I am. Probably never fully dumped the clutch either, just managed to launch unintentionally fast :-)

Funny enough the roads were wet this morning and I went over a manhole cover while pulling away from a light giving what I thought was pretty light throttle and felt the rear spin briefly and then heard the bike backfire due to DTC cutting throttle for a moment. Saved from myself again!
