Question Best on/off road option for Hyperstrada

Hi There, I just acquired an Hyperstrada 821 currently equipped with Michelin Road 4 tires. While these are fine for my commute in the city of Hanoi, i also intend to go offroad couple of times a year on bumpy and narrow (sometimes a bit muddy) mountain tracks in the North of Vietnam.
I was thinking to buy Pirelli MT60 for both wheels or eventually Conti TKC 80 for the front and TKC 70 for the back.
Any advice/suggestion?

There is no option that handles mud and is good on the street.

MT60s don't last long.

Off-pavement is where TKC80 works best.

These are getting very good write ups from the inmates at ADV rider:

Mud - I don't know. If you only go off road a few times seriously, maybe change to full purpose tires for that trip.

One concern would be the abrupt clutch - not much of an issue on the street, but can catch you in tricky offroad situations. Might want to check out this thread:

My last set of tyres on the Hyper were Pirelli Scorpion Trail II. Huge improvement over the original Scorpion Trail I. Done lots of touring both on and off-road. No grip issues on twisty roads, and surprisingly good off-road. Besides, they last almost forever: rear lasts 12000 km, front even lasted 18000 km.

Probably nowhere near as good off-road as Conti TKC 80, but likely the better all-round tyre.

I ride my HS off road too and like appliance821 says the clutch really sucks there. Especially while negotiating rough/loose surfaces at low speeds - trying to feather the clutch is very hit or miss. I can also attest the HS does not do well in mud even with TCK80s which is what I run. I've had one very embarrassing mud bath and several close calls so far to drive this point home.

Need to change up your final drive gearing then you won't need to feather the clutch.

Are you talking a smaller countershaft sprocket?
If so I don't think I want to go there just yet. If my plans work out financially I'll be picking up a DR650 this Spring for trail riding. Once that happens I'm going to put street tires back on the Hyperstrada and keep her on the pavement going forward.
I just find that there's very few places I can go off road with so little ground clearance. It just puts a damper on the fun.

Excellent choice on the DR, below is a great DR650 forum, tons of useful info. I love my DR650, I'm on number 2, number 1 had a top end failure due to oil starvation at almost 70K miles, number 2 just crossed 30K miles a little while ago.

Thanks for the link. Nice to hear even more good reports about it too. My other bike is the Suzuki Savage 650 so I've come to appreciate the reliability of the brand. And the nice easy clutches too.
I'm looking forward to the DR for future adventure excursions.
