Track day

Just got back from a track day on my '13 821 hyper. I'm no racer and rode in the novice group, but the bike did great. In total I covered 140km, don't think I was ever below 6000 RPM. Not a single complaint from the 821. Pirelli Angel GT tires were up to the task as well, plenty of grip once I dropped them to around 32 PSI.

If anyone here is thinking of doing a track day, but concerned the the hyper isn't really a "track bike", just go for it. If you're a capable rider you'll be fine. I was outpacing most sport bikes in my group, including a new Tuono and various litre bikes. Obviously they would be faster all things being equal, but in the novice group the hyper was more than capable of holding its own with a semi-skilled pilot on board.

What would I change for my next track day? I'd definitely like to add a gear indicator, and wouldn't mind some rear sets. I scraped pegs on a few of the slower tight corners, even at full dangle. For the hyperstradas, I would recommend removing the centre stand.

I know what you mean. The hyper has some very good points for track usage (phenomenal brakes, nimbleness, and acceleration out of the corners). However it does have a few weaknesses when it's up against full sporties.. she's comes up a little short for final drive speed, she tends to drag hard parts easily (pegs and center stand), plus I'd say if I was to lay her down, I'd probably cry (or at least my wallet would).

Here's a photo from my track day with mine from one of the resident photographers (ThumPhoto) at Westwood Raceway in Mission BC.. biggest regret was not removing the Termi and putting the factory slip back on. I was constantly thinking "don't crash on the expensive side", which in reality was taking away from my concentration.

Yup, I definitely made more passes in corners than on straights. Wish I had some photos to post, but there weren't any photographers at the track.
