My Hyper has been to the dealer in Bangkok, Thailand 3 times now after covering 1,000km and the only explanation they gave me was that I am using the throttle incorrectly, I'm not supposed to blip the throttle when downshifting. Thus is the reason my bike has a pronounced metal to metal knocking sound, almost like piston slap.

However, I was not able to replicate the sounds on 2 other hyper's at the service center nor was I able to reproduce it on the demo 821 monster they had.

I was also given an explanation on how a L-Twin works and that blipping the throttle is bad for an L-Twin. I have a S2R 1000 that I've used for 8 years and despite being an air cooled engine with cable throttle, I never had any issues riding it the same way.

I am now reluctant to ride my hyper until I can get a hold of someone that would be willing to investigate and diagnose the real issue with the bike.

Hi,

i spoke to my dealer, he says that is true and utter bullshit.
If possible change the dealer!

I am the master of blipping when I downshift. Done that with my Monster for almost 26000 Km without problem and with my Hyper about 8600 Km.
Also I do that with my VW Beetle for 26 years now...

At the correct number of revs, blipping does help reducing the wear on your
gearbox....

well, I heard a similar story though.
The mechanic who took care of my 996 told me that blipping the throttle on a (slightly) tuned Ducati may cause some "sneezing" back into the airfilter. Sort of a backfire.
Nothing to worry about that but it could cause some burn marks on the airfilter. Something like that.

I have always been told that using the throttle on a bike/car without load (so in neutral for example) is not good for your bearings. But then again: I am not a mechanical engineer.

I have been bliping the throttle on the last 3 bikes 2 of which were air cooled L-twins a 696 and a 900 none of the three make the noise! Find a new dealer!

Matching revs is always important when you let the clutch out on normal gearboxes, less so with a slipper clutch although it does increase wear. I agree that revving the bike in neutral is hard on it, but blipping the throttle on downshifts is not. The Triumph 900 we rented in the UK back in 1997 had obviously spent some time bouncing off the rev limiter, likely in neutral. It ran like poo, would not do 80 two-up.

I've learned to downshift approaching 'stale green' lights or stops on my bikes, as most don't like to be downshifted at a standstill. If I don't let the clutch out, I don't bother matching revs.

That defiantly does not sound right.

I fully agree with rev matching when shifting gears but to me blipping is for Harley's :D

I cringe when I hear the I-4's just pinning the throttle to hear it bounce off the limiter. All the old stalwarts still say needless reving hurts the bearings but how can you not crack the 821 every so often standing still? Every thing in moderation...except bourbon and sex. Happy New Year!

I have similar problem on my 2013 Hyperstrada (12k miles now), driving purely in the UK. When i downshift and blip the throttle, sometimes even on idle when parking i hear something like backfire back into airbox. I am tempted to blame this on the timing of this "blip" and intake valve closing timing.

Maybe valve clearance adjustment might resolve this? I guess i will see after another 4k miles when i am due to have valve clearance service.
I have K&N airfilter installed that i cleaned few months back and couldnt see any "burn" marks in the airbox


Adding to the list of problems i had so far with my Hyperstrada 2013:

- ECU, coils, Dash replacement in the first year of the bike
- whole clutch replacement in the first year as the clutch was jerky/ not engaging smoothly
- water radiator leak after 2.5years (out of warranty) - Ducati confirmed faulty part, replaced radiator and fans for free, i've paid for the labor

- now, it looks like i have a faulty thermostat as the water rushes into the radiator when only 40 degrees Celsius warm, but overheating when driving in the town (only explanation i have is that the thermostat is slightly open but not opening fully on higher temps)
